Madiwala Market in Ward 151 is a massive vibrant market that transacts tons of vegetables in a day. It has given livelihood to hundreds of vendors and farmers and has existed for about 40 years now. Farmers and Vendors leave approximately 10 tons of their unsold produce in the market, all of which are going to the landfill. SVP India’s intervention with Vedan trust created a crate & cart segregation at the source model. This helped in procuring clean segregated waste at the end of the day. Due to this, the waste that was previously going in the compactor was now diverted to livestock nearby. We are now diverting close to about 4 to 5 tons of vegetables per day from the landfill.

SVP’s foray into waste management started by supporting the SWM in Madiwala Market. All systems had earlier failed to work in the market, and even the best plans were not working for several reasons. Once SVP Bengaluru stepped into Madiwala Market, the system got a massive push with the Grants provided, the networking, and the relationship with the municipality and local political representatives. A large market has a complex system of functioning and has many forces. It needed the experience of organizational and liaisoning skills to put a plan in place and make it successful. Swachh Bharat Mission has captured this market’s SWM and has presented it to our PM, Sri Narendra Modiji.

Story of success

Coming into the Madiwala market as a customer, one finds it neat and well organized, which is a stark contrast to before SVP’s intervention. A tarred road makes it easier for the customer to ride in, pick and ride out; there was a muddy road earlier. From the aspect of the vegetable vendor, his business has grown manifold as footfalls have increased. From the animal aspect, cows and dogs are not having plastic bags stuck in their mouths; they merrily chew on banana leaves due to innovative segregation and prompt collection. The sweet success of Amogh, an NGO for differently abled young adults, is heartwarming as they make bio enzymes from leftover lemons from Madiwala, leading to income generation. Many community kitchens and cowsheds benefit from this simple crate and cart method. Lastly, women PKs are joyously riding the E cart given by SVP, empowering them and making them less dependent on their male colleagues.
